Department Overview

Head of Department: Prof. Bindu Sharma

The Department was founded in October, 1977 to impart advance and applied education to M.Sc. students in Zoology. Prof. S. Khera was the founder Professor and Head of Department. Dr. S.S. Lal joined the department as lecturer in February 1978. First batch of students was admitted in 1978 with specialization in Parasitology. In 1980 Professor Khera left the department and joined the Punjab University, Chandigarh. Thereafter Dr. S.S. Lal officiated as Head for two years. In 1982 Professor K.C. Pandey joined the department as Professor and Head. Dr. H.S. Singh joined the department as lecturer in 1983. Dr. Vinod Kumar as Lecturer and Dr. S.V.S. Rana as Reader joined in 1987. Further Dr. Kumar left the department in 1993 after joining the Lucknow University. Subsequently, Dr. S.K. Bhardwaj and Dr. A.K. Chaubey joined the department in 1996 and in 1998 respectively. Further the department was strengthened by the addition Dr. D.K. Chauhan. In 2018 Department was re-strengthened by the addition of two Associate Professors namely Dr. Neelu Jain Gupta and Dr.  Bindu Sharma. Besides the Parasitology the two more specializations were introduced i.e. Fish and Fisheries (1982-83) and Endocrinology (1987-88). Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) programme was introduced in 1985. In 1996 one course i.e. M.Sc. in Environmental Scienece was introduced.

Faculty members of the department have well equipped with independent research laboratories viz. Molecular Taxonomy, Nematology, Chronobiology, and Immunoparasitology.  All laboratories are well equipped with sophisticated instruments and working in the front line of research areas-

  1. Molecular taxonomy of helminth parasites in fishes
  2. Bio-control of insect pests
  3. Entrainment pathway and orientation mechanisms in birds
  4. DLAN effects in zebra finches
  5. Immunoparasitology
  6. Chronobiology and Chronomedicine in human

Research activities are supported by funding agencies like UGC, SERB DST, CSIR, UP state government, DBT and DRDO. The department has its own library apart from the central library in the university. So far more than 148 and 200 students have been awarded Ph. D and M. Phil. degree respectively. More than 400 research papers and 15 books have been published by the department. A number of students are in different positions in India and abroad in teaching as well as in research.
