Department
of Russian Language
Head of Department : Mr. S. K.
Dutta
The
Russian Language course was started in 1969 as
a non-credit course
for the M.Phil students.
A certificate course of Proficiency in Russian
Language was started in the same year. The Diploma
course was also started in 1970 and the Advance
Diploma in Russian Language & Literature was
started in 1977. This department happens to be
one of the oldest centres for imparting- Russian
language skills in India and many students were
earlier sent to the ex-USSR for higher studies
under the Cultural Exchange program and in recent
times to the other centres of Russian language
(learning) in India & Russia. This department
is trying it’s best in reviving those scholarships,
and also begetting those offered by the external
scholarships division of the M.H.R.D., for the
students of science & technology. A make-shift
language laboratory has been made for a 10- student
class-room. Audio-visual methods are practiced
for imparting the language-skills. From time to
time, educational tours to places like Indo-Russian
Cultural Centre, New Delhi have been arranged for
the benefit of the students.
Russian
is one of the five official languages of the
United Nations
and is official/working language
of the Russian Federation and the C.I.S Republics.

at the Certificate Course level i.e., after completing of Certificate and

skills for the communication and development of a working knowledge is imparted.
In the Advanced Diploma course, the students are introduced to translation
skill and Russian Literature, which is one of the finest of the European
civilization. The central objective of all the
courses is to progress towards a bilingual
competence for communication. And for the achievement of the said objectives,
audio-visual methods of teaching are also practiced, by using tape-recorders,
record-players, headphones, slide projector and a computer. The Departmental
library has more than 8,000 books, dictionaries, encyclopaedia, etc on Russian
language, literature, and science, society. The scope Russian language exists
