The department of History was established in
1977. Initially it started with M.A. program but
later in 1981 M.Phil. was started with a broad
objective of promoting the scientific teaching
and the study of History with particular emphasis
on the economic . The department offers courses
in all the three periods of Ancient, Medieval and
Modern Indian history along with courses on histories
of other countries with emphasis on Modern history.
So far more than 63 students have been awarded
Ph.D. degree. Faculty members are actively engaged
in research work. The students of the department
show good performance in the UGC-JRF/NET examinations.
The Department is developing a small museum with
historical artifacts provided by the Registration
Officer of the Antiquarian. Proposal to develop
Tourism Study and Training is under the consideration
of the State Government.
History is no longer regarded as mere chronological
narrative, but is considered to be the history
of growth, development of society and human civilization.
It is of utmost importance that history should
be properly understood, interpreted and taught.
The Department of History was established in 1977-78
with an M.A program. The M.Phil Program started
in 1981 with a broad objective of promoting the
scientific teaching and the study of History with
particular emphasis on the economic and social
changes. The Department offers regular courses
in M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. The syllabus is based
on U.G.C. guidelines and is so designed as to prepare
the students not only for the basic degree in the
subject but also for the various competitive examinations.
The teaching at the M.Phil stage has been directed
primarily towards the specialization. The course
taught in the department include the History of
India, Europe, South-East Asia, USSR, USA, World
History, Philosophy of History, Indian Historiography
and Social Formation. In the study of other countries,
the emphasis is mainly on Modern History. Recently,
a project report has been submitted to establish
a “Shodh Sansthan” on the Kranti of
1857 in the Department of History.
Post-Graduate Course:
M.A. is a two-year duration
course consisting of four semesters with two courses
in each semester.
M.Phil program:
It is one year duration course
consisting of two semesters with two courses in
each semester and
dissertation.
Ph.D. Program:
This undertakes all periods of History-Ancient,
Medieval and Modern and also Indo-Italian History.
